Why consider a neck lift

For many of us, the neck begins to show age faster than the whole face. Jowls can form from fatty deposits at the jaw line and laxity in the muscles. The neck muscles may begin to separate and hang, creating “bands.” Even the skin may droop, resulting in the “turkey wattle” look. If you are experiencing any of these problems, then you may want to consider a neck lift.

Sometimes, it isn’t age that determines the need for a neck lift, also known as platysmaplasty. Other reasons people choose a neck lift in Texas is because they have lost considerable weight or have a hereditary feature they would like to remedy. In fact, many younger people undergo neck lifts.

To find out if a neck lift can help you, please contact Dr. Joseph M. Perlman at the Advanced Plastic Surgery Centre in Spring. He has a reputation in the Houston area for providing quality, conscientious care. He and his staff have been instrumental in the neck lifts of thousands of men and women from Spring, The Woodlands, and other surrounding locales.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Neck Lift?

Most men and women who undergo a neck lift have sagging skin and excess fat in their lower cheeks, jaw line, and neck. They may also be unhappy with a poorly defined jaw line. With a neck lift, patients can achieve the following:

  • A sharper and better-defined jaw line
  • Improved neck and chin angle
  • Less tired look with more youthful appearance

Although a neck lift can be effective at giving your neck a tighter appearance, it will not treat lines around the mouth nor will it improve skin surface defects and discoloration.

What Is the Process for a Neck Lift?

When you undergo a neck lift, you will usually be under general anesthesia. The procedure, which can take two to three hours, starts with small incisions at the ear. Your neck lift surgeon will raise the skin and fat away from the underlying muscles, then pull the skin up, so all the creases and folds are minimized. The final step is the removal of the excess skin.

Many times patients only need a neck lift rather than a full facelift. However, when a facelift is chosen, and a neck lift is included, these two together can complete the rejuvenation package. In fact, a neck lift may be performed in conjunction with a variety of procedures, including liposuction and brow lift.

The extent of your neck lift will depend on how much change you want in your appearance. By carefully listening to your concerns and objectives, Dr. Perlman will help you decide whether you should have additional procedures with your neck lift.

What Does Recovery Entail After a Neck Lift?

Your doctor may require you to wear a compression garment around the lower face and neck for about a week after your neck lift. It is common to feel bruising and swelling for a few weeks. Another side effect for some neck lift patients is stiffness in the neck and some difficulty swallowing. You can typically return to work within two weeks.

Men and women from across Houston have benefitted from the expertise of Dr. Perlman. For decades, residents of Spring, The Woodlands, and other nearby communities have traveled to Advanced Plastic Surgery Centre for successful neck lifts. Patients have long appreciated the experience and integrity of Dr. Perlman and his staff.

Recovery time after Neck Lift

Recovery time after a neck lift will depend on the individual, as well as the extent of surgery. Typically, patients return to daily activities, including a return to work, within 2 weeks after surgery. Expect your neck to feel tight for a few weeks, and know that bruising and swelling are normal. These effects should subside gradually, with visible bruising typically gone after the first week, and that “tight” feeling remaining for up to several months. Your cosmetic surgeon will provide you with detailed instructions for recovery and aftercare.

Considerations & goals with neck liposuction
  • Improves the appearance of a “double chin” or fullness underneath the chin
  • Refines the jawline to enhance the chin or bring balance to facial features
  • Patients with good skin tone will typically see the best results
  • Can be combined with chin augmentation or rhinoplasty to further enhance facial contours
  • Results are permanent so long as a patient maintains a stable weight

Choosing the right surgeon for Neck Lift

Improving the appearance of the neck requires a surgeon to understand the unique relationship between the anatomy of the face and the neck, and how each contributes to a patient’s natural appearance. To perform neck contouring safely and successfully, a cosmetic surgeon must have experience in multiple facial cosmetic procedures as well as a highly-developed aesthetic eye. However, many doctors who practice cosmetic surgery do not receive adequate training in aesthetic face and neck surgery in their residency training, so it’s important to do your homework and pick an experienced and dedicated surgeon.

Combining Neck Contouring & Facial Procedures

Facelift. It is rare that a cosmetic surgeon will perform a facelift without also incorporating some element of neck contouring. Combining a facelift and neck lift allows a cosmetic surgeon to address jowling, sagging cheeks, and lax neck tissues in a single procedure.

Chin augmentation

A skilled, qualified cosmetic surgeon can insert a custom-fit chin implant during a neck liposuction procedure, typically using the same incisions, to refine the neckline and add definition to a weak or receding chin.

Balanced proportions are key to an attractive face. Reshaping the nose to better fit a patient’s face while also improving the jawline can dramatically enhance this sense of balance.
