Why you should consider facial implants.

Facial implants augment, reconstruct or rejuvenate your features. Made of specially formed solid, biocompatible materials, implants are available in a wide range of sizes and styles for the chin, jaw, nose, and cheek. Many facial implant patients are bothered by a small chin, weak jaw, or lack of facial contour. With facial implants, they can add or restore contour and/or proportion to the face.

Dr. Joseph M. Perlman has spent more than 25 years working with patients in the Houston area, including Spring and The Woodlands. With his expertise and the assistance of his professional staff at Advanced Plastic Surgery Centre, facial implants are improving the lives of hundreds of men and women each year.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Facial Implant?

To be an ideal candidate for a facial implant, your head and skull should have reached physical maturity. This usually happens in late adolescence. Other suitable individuals for a facial implant include those who

  • Are physically healthy
  • Do not smoke
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Have specific goals for the procedure

When you meet with Dr. Perlman for your facial implants consultation, he will evaluate your objectives and take a close look at the features you want to correct. He and his experienced team at Advanced Plastic Surgery Centre will then guide you toward the precise type and size of implants that are best suited for you.

What Is the Process for a Facial Implant?

There are several different facial implant procedures available. These include the following:

  • Cheek implants
  • Chin implants
  • Jaw implants
  • Nose implants

Facial implant surgery follows a similar pattern for all facial areas. The surgeon makes a small incision near where the implant will be placed, either in a crease or inside the mouth at the gum/lip junction. Then a pocket is made in the facial tissue, the implant is inserted, and the incision is stitched.

Facial implant surgery generally takes one to two hours, usually with general anesthesia. The incision is bandaged or taped, and stitches are removed in five to 10 days (sutures placed inside the mouth will dissolve in a similar period of time). Sometimes facial implants are inserted at the same time as a facelift, nose, or eyelid procedure.

What Does Recovery Entail After a Facial Implant?

Men and women who opt for facial implants will notice results almost immediately. However, the full effects will be obscured by swelling that may take several months to completely abate. The results of the surgery are essentially permanent. Most facial implant patients return to work within one week.

At Advanced Plastic Surgery Centre, your comfort, safety, and satisfaction are of utmost importance. Dr. Perlman and his staff will make sure that you are thoroughly cared for before, during, and after your facial implant procedure. Our comprehensive care and welcoming attitude have made us a top destination for patients in Spring, The Woodlands, and other locations in and around Houston.

Can I See Facial Implants Before and After Photos?

When you meet with Dr. Perlman, he will have some facial implants before and after pictures to show you. These images will include patients from the Houston area and beyond. By viewing facial implant before and after photos, you can visualize what the procedure can really do for you.

Types of Implants

Chin Implants — Chin implants come in many different styles that provide horizontal, vertical and square width that extends back along the jawline.

Jaw Angle/Jawline Implants — Jaw-angle implants — often called jaw or jawline implants — augment the back part of the jaw.

Cheek Implants — Cheek implants are available in many different styles to augment the cheekbone (malar) and/or the area on its underside (submalar).

Nose Implants — Nasal implants can help elevate the bridge or dorsal line, and/or improve tip projection.

Lip Implants — Made of a soft, spongy cylindrical implant, lip implants are designed to mimic the soft tissue feel of the lips.

The Procedure

Time-in-surgery depends on the specifics of the treatment area and number of facial implants, as well as what — if any — additional facial procedures are being performed. Treatment could last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. Most facial implant cases are done on an outpatient basis, but more extensive facial augmentation procedures may require an overnight stay.

The procedure may be performed under local anesthesia (awake, but sedated) or general anesthesia (asleep). You can discuss the appropriate type of anesthesia with Dr. Perlman.

The most common facial implants are chin, jaw, cheek, nose, orbital (around the eye) and temporal (sides of the skull) implants. Sometimes more than one type of implant is needed. Dr. Perlman can help make this determination during your consultation.

Is a Facial Implant Right for You?

Facial implants may be used to help strengthen a jaw line or to balance the chin or cheekbones with the rest of the face. This surgery can help you with your self-image if you are self-conscious about your appearance.

Implants may help fill out a face that appears “sunken” or tired. For example, jaw implants can help strengthen the jaw line, improving the proportions of the face. Chin implants can add proportion or balance to a face. An implant placed over the cheekbones may help restore a more youthful appearance in some patients.

With the strides that have been made in the last decade in medical technology, devices and materials, facial implants are becoming more common.

Surgery Steps

Preparing for Your Surgery

After your consultation and decisions about surgery, we will give you pre-operative information that explains everything you should do and know before your procedure. Your surgical team will instruct you on how to prepare for surgery. You should arrange for someone to drive you home after your surgery, whether your surgery is outpatient or inpatient. You also may want to make arrangements for someone to help you for a day or two while you heal.

Anesthesia

We use general anesthetic so that you will sleep and remain comfortable throughout the procedure. Local anesthesia with intravenous sedation is also an option for some patients.

After Your Surgery

It is very important that you follow your surgeon’s instructions. This will promote healing and improve progress towards your new physical appearance. Also, it is important that you attend all follow-up appointments so that your surgeon can assess your long-term results and answer any questions or concerns.
