What Is Breast Revision?
Breast revision is a procedure that aims to correct any unforeseen complications in those who had previously undergone breast augmentation. These issues can relate specifically to the implants or simply be caused by changes in the breast tissue that occur naturally, such as following childbirth or from breastfeeding. Old implants are often replaced during breast revision surgery, but problems can sometimes be corrected without the need to replace implants.
At Advanced Plastic Surgery Centre, Dr. Joseph M. Perlman understands that the goal of breast revision is to correct any problem encountered following breast augmentation while relieving you of any further concerns about your health. He and his caring, highly competent staff will work diligently to ensure that you reach that goal. We invite patients from in and around Houston, including Spring and The Woodlands, to stop in for a scheduled evaluation and learn more about the benefits of breast reduction.

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Revision?
You may be a good candidate for breast revision for the following reasons:
- Indication of shell leak in a silicone implant
- Implant deflation (loss of saline volume)
- Capsular contracture (the tightening of scar tissue around the implant
- To correct symmastia
- Double-bubble deformity
- A shift in implant position
- Increase or decrease implant size
- Change in breast tissue shape or volume due to loss of weight, weight gain or the stretching of skin
What Is the Process for Breast Revision?
During an initial consultation, you will discuss the problem you are experiencing and what results you would like to achieve through surgery. Dr. Perlman will outline exactly what will take place during the process and give you detailed pre- and post-operation instructions.
Just as during a breast enhancement procedure, medications and general anesthesia are administered to ensure the comfort of the patient. Strategic incisions are made to cut down on the appearance of scars.
The exact methods Dr. Perlman employs during a breast revision procedure vary depending on what needs to be corrected and what you would like to achieve. When there is a need to remove implants, the implants will be drained and then removed, along with scar tissue and, in the case of silicone implants, muscle and tissue. In cases of capsular contracture, Dr. Perlman can correct the problem by cutting open the capsule or removing it entirely. If implants are being replaced, new implants will often be placed immediately after the old ones are removed.
What Does Recovery Entail After Breast Revision?
Again, the length of recovery is dependent on what your breast revision procedure entails. Breast revision is typically an outpatient procedure so you can go home the same day. Breast revision is typically less invasive than an initial breast augmentation, meaning for a quicker recovery period. Strenuous physical activity should be avoided for at least two weeks following surgery, but returning to a normal work schedule can often take place after 7 to 10 days.
Dr. Perlman will divulge advice specific to your individual healing before and after surgery, and his staff will make sure you are supported throughout your recovery. No matter where you reside in the Houston area — be it Spring, The Woodlands, or elsewhere — we will keep an eye on you from the beginning to the end of your breast reduction process.
Can I See Breast Revision Before and After Photos?
One of the best ways to ease a patient’s mind about undergoing a breast revision procedure is to see before and after photos of similar surgeries. During your consultation at the Advanced Plastic Surgery Centre, Dr. Perlman will be pleased to show you a collection of breast revision before and after pictures that help you fully understand the results that can be achieved through this process.
How Much Does a Breast Revision Cost?

Customized Solutions
Breast implant revision surgery is not a standard or routine procedure and needs to be tailored specifically to the patient’s goals and desires. Therefore, this surgery should be performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon who is well-trained and experienced in all types of breast surgery and who will listen to the patient’s goals and desires and will develop a surgical plan specifically to address all of the issues at the time of surgery.
10-Year Rule
Over time, breast implants can change shape or size, and the overlying breast tissue can also change, creating an appearance or feel to the breast that is less desirable than the original result. Also, many breast implants have a lifetime warranty on the actual implant device, but after ten years the costs associated with having surgery to replace the implants are no longer covered. Because of this, many women will elect to replace or update their breast implants at or around the 10-year time frame.
Breast Revision Benefits
Relief from Previous Implant Complications
Although breast augmentation is a popular cosmetic procedure that is often performed with positive outcomes, any surgical procedure poses the risk of complications. In certain cases, breast implant revision may be required for health purposes, or to relieve physical discomfort.
Improved Cosmetic Appearance
Along with the physical problems caused by previous implant complications, the cosmetic appearance of the breasts may also be affected.
Enhanced Self-Esteem and Confidence
When a woman chooses to enhance her appearance with breast augmentation surgery, implant complications that result in breast deformity can be devastating. Breast implant revision has the ability to turn a negative augmentation experience into a positive one.
